During the isolation of 2020, social distancing became a reality that transformed how we communicated and interacted. As our perspectives on public life were challenged, I sought to reinvent the habit of correspondence. Historically, the postcard was an essential component of travel—a way to let others know we were thinking of them. In this series of "Interventions," I reclaimed that tradition to bridge the distance created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
I revisited years of collected postcards, specifically a book of Rembrandt’s self-portraits. With the modern "selfie" in mind, I began interacting creatively with these classical images, juxtaposing them with contemporary self-expression by layering clippings, origami papers, and loose drawings like analog Instagram filters. I completed each piece by mailing it to friends and family, an attempt to keep us close and extend a message of hope through the physical act of creativity.
